Collateral Beauty

In the movie Collateral Beauty, Will Smith plays the role of a father who lost his six-year old girl to a rare disease. He then questions his very own existence and starts an internal battle with the three things that every person cares about: Time, Love and Death. Everyone wants more time, everybody seeks to be loved and every person fear’s death.

When our lives enter a storm or even just an illusions of a storm or even a perception of a possible storm, we are confronted with our basic human needs. All pain can be cured by Time and Love, and all relationships can be repaired in the face of death. Time is given as a gift which is not abundant but infinite, not for laughter and not for sorrow. Love is in everything and is not a choice, it's around us and it is pure. Death is the one thing that man can be sure of, but it is also the one thing that always surprise us.

How is this applicable to our everyday lives? We seek purpose and happiness in the future, there where it is still out of reach. We work long hours to earn larger salaries, we sacrifice time with loved ones for the purpose of building a better future. The irony is that Time and Love is in the present and it is only Death that lurks in the future. Is it not then today’s Time and Love we must utilise to experience our purpose and happiness? Because once Time runs out and Love loses its flavour, we are but only left with Death.
